What an opening sequence needs

Opening sequences are very important because the beginning of the film is what draws the audience in. If the film starts off exciting, the audience wants to watch more. Opening sequences need to:

  • Set audience expectations e.g. style and plot
  • To ressure the audience, by demondstrating genre conventions
  • Introduce and establish main characters
  • Set up initial equilibrium that will be disrupted later
  • Introduce any themes and motifs linked to ideologies (messages) in the film
  • Establish the time and place

In our opening sequence we will try and include all these points to draw in the audience so they want to watch more.
